Day 4: A day in Toledo...walking tour on a beautiful day.

Panorama of Toledo

Roman causeway (road) with a mosque built upon it in the background.

Inside the tiny mosque, built for a families private use in the year 999, are 9 tower/copulas, each a different style. This style is called the Caliphate style which is early Moorish style when they first settled in Spain. The other style "modesco" is a later influence after hundreds of years in Spain and melding with Jews and Christians in Toledo.

The back wall of the little mosque was added later  - it would have been open to the garden in the past. That part of the mosque is built upon a roman wall dating from 1000 years before the mosque was built. And the roman wall was built upon a cave (seen through the glass floor now) that dates back to the original Toledano inhabitants some 6000 years ago. Toledo is a town of recycling and reuse - building on things from the past.
